Rotaract Blue recently organized a "Blue & White Dress Down Friday" to raise funds in aid of the Somalia famine relief efforts. The initiative was supported by nine local firms - AON, BDO, Caledonian, Deloitte, KPMG, KRyS Global, PWC, Trident Trust and WestStar TV.These employers encouraged their employees to dress casually on a Friday in the month of August and participating employees donated $5. The effort was hugely successful; Rotaract Blue raised over

CI$3,000 and the club presented the funds to the British Red Cross by way of the Cayman Islands branch.
On July 20, 2011 the United Nations (UN) officially declared a famine in Somalia.  Since the beginning of the year, the severe drought conditions in Somalia have been at its worst in a decade. Despite efforts to offset/minimize the impact of the droughts, results proved unsuccessful as the harsh weather conditions caused significant damages to crops, livestock and water sources resulting in famine conditions being experienced.  The UN also reported that more than 30% of Somali children are acutely malnourished. In certain regions such as Bakool and Lower Shabelle, malnutrition is exceeding 50% and Unicef reports that children are dying at a rate of about one every six minutes.
On receiving the donation, xxx of the Cayman Islands Red Cross said, "We are pleased that Rotaract Blue made such an effort to support the people of Somalia. The suffering in that country is almost unthinkable." S/he continued, "Statistics from the British Red Cross indicate that a donation of £20 can purchase ten jerry cans that enable a family to transport and store water safely.  Rotaract Blue's donation to the British Red Cross will assist many families in obtaining basic materials such as water and food."
Trudy-Ann Baines, Rotaract Blue International Service Director and organizer of the initiative, said, "Rotaract Blue is an organization of young professionals who are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of members of both our local and international communities near and far. We heard the call for assistance to relief efforts in Somalia and we were eager to answer. Rotaract Blue is  very grateful to the firms that participated and made this initiative a success."
